Welcome to BeatingTheIndex.com, a personal finance blog largely focused on the North American oil and gas sector in general and the Canadian oil patch in particular. What first started as an investment journal has now evolved into a community revolving around one passion: investing in the oil and gas sector.
The world needs a lot of energy and we have billions of barrels in North America ready to be tapped thanks to the latest advances in drilling and completion technology. This site covers the hot resource plays and follows up on emerging oil and gas producers showing promise in a writing style the lay investor can easily understand.
Every month, I will post a portfolio snapshot and measure its performance to the Toronto Stock Exchange on a yearly basis in order to compare the performance of my O&G weighted portfolio to my balanced fully indexed registered retirement savings portfolio. I will also provide market commentary and stock trading commentary explaining why I bought or sold a stock.
I am not a day trader or a professional trader; I am an investor. My trades are not based on complicated graphs with multiple indicators, they are based on fundamentals and price action. I love researching the energy sector and I follow up on my investments regularly.
So stick around and share your thoughts and opinions freely because your contribution will only improve this site for the better.

My DIY stock portfolio is overweight in Canadian oil producers for a reason. I believe Oil consumption is on the path of growth for the next decade and I intend to take every advantage possible of it:
